AcroYoga
yoga-stylePartner-based practice combining yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage into dynamic, trust-based movements
AcroYoga combines yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage into a partner-based practice. It involves three roles: the base (on the ground, supporting the flyer), the flyer (elevated and balanced by the base), and the spotter (ensuring safety). The practice builds extraordinary trust, communication, and physical skill.
Three Pillars
Solar AcroYoga: The dynamic, acrobatic aspects — flying, basing, and transitions that look like circus arts. Poses include counterbalances, standing acroyoga, and therapeutic flying.
Lunar AcroYoga: The therapeutic, massage-based practices derived from Thai massage. The flyer is supported passively in stretches while the base provides traction and compression.
Yoga: Traditional yoga practices that build the foundation of body awareness, breathing, and strength needed for the acrobatic elements.
Safety Considerations
AcroYoga requires proper instruction before attempting complex poses. Spotters are essential when learning new movements. The practice demands:
- Clear verbal communication between partners
- Strength and flexibility from both base and flyer
- Falling techniques (breakfalls)
- Gradual progression from simpler to complex poses
Mat Considerations
AcroYoga requires specific mat considerations:
- Larger mat area: Two people need space to practice safely
- Extra thickness for bases: Bases spend extended time on their backs — thick mats protect spines and shoulder blades
- Firm, grippy surface: Bases need their feet and hands to grip the mat securely while lifting
- Multiple mats: Pairs often use multiple mats side-by-side or extra-large practice mats
