Dharma
generalSanskrit concept meaning righteous duty, purpose, or cosmic order — a foundational concept in yogic philosophy
Dharma is a Sanskrit word with multiple layered meanings central to Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, and referenced across the broader yogic tradition. Its most common translations include "duty," "righteous action," "cosmic order," or "one's purpose."
Multiple Meanings of Dharma
Universal Dharma: The cosmic order — the laws that govern the universe and all of nature. In this sense, practicing yoga in harmony with one's body and nature is living in accordance with Dharma.
Personal Dharma (Svadharma): Each individual's specific role, purpose, and duty based on their nature, stage of life, and circumstances. The Bhagavad Gita's central teaching involves Arjuna discovering his svadharma.
Ethical Conduct: Acting rightly, honestly, and in accordance with moral principles.
The Teachings: In Buddhist context, "Dharma" refers to the Buddha's teachings.
Dharma in Yoga Practice
In yoga, practitioners often use "dharma" to refer to:
- The aspiration to live in accordance with one's highest purpose
- Teachings and lineages of yoga that are honored and passed on
- The ethical dimension of practice — how yoga insights translate into action in daily life
Dharma Yoga
Several yoga teachers have named their styles or centers after this concept, most notably Sri Dharma Mittra, a revered teacher in New York known for his mastery of yoga postures and traditional yogic lifestyle. "Dharma Yoga" as a style emphasizes devotion, ethical living, and traditional practice.
