Mat Length
featureThe long dimension of a yoga mat — standard is 68-72 inches, with long mats available for taller practitioners
Mat length is the long dimension of a yoga mat, running from top to bottom during practice. Standard yoga mats are 68 inches (173cm) long, with most quality mats extending to 72 inches (183cm). Long mats of 74-85 inches are available for tall practitioners.
Standard vs. Long Mats
68 inches (173cm): The traditional standard length. Adequate for practitioners up to approximately 5'8" (173cm).
72 inches (183cm): The current common standard for most mid-range and premium mats. Works comfortably for practitioners up to approximately 6'0" (183cm).
74-85 inches (188-216cm): Long or "tall" mats for practitioners over 6'0". Some brands offer 84-inch mats specifically for very tall users.
The Downward Dog Test
The most common length test: in Downward Dog, both hands and both feet should be entirely on the mat with a few inches of margin. If your feet or hands hang off the mat, you need a longer mat.
Other poses that test length:
- Savasana (lying flat — the full body must fit)
- Full splits (front-to-back)
- High lunge to Warrior I transitions in a sun salutation
Why Length Matters
Hands or feet off the mat creates real problems:
- Contact with cold or dirty floor
- Grip inconsistency — floor grip differs from mat grip
- Psychological distraction from noticing you're "off the mat"
Traveling with a Long Mat
Long mats are bulkier and heavier. Travelers often accept a shorter mat to gain portability, using it primarily as a hygiene layer while extending onto the studio floor for length-dependent poses.
