Natural Latex
materialThe raw sap from rubber trees used to produce natural rubber — relevant for latex allergy considerations
Natural latex is the milky sap harvested from Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees. It is the raw material from which natural rubber is processed. In the context of yoga mats, "natural latex" is often used interchangeably with "natural rubber," though technically latex is the liquid precursor and rubber is the processed solid material.
Latex Allergy — Critical Safety Information
Natural latex contains proteins that can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Latex allergy affects approximately 1-6% of the general population, with higher rates among healthcare workers and others with repeated latex exposure.
Reactions can include contact dermatitis (skin rash, itching), rhinitis or asthma symptoms, and in severe cases anaphylactic shock.
If you have a latex allergy, avoid natural rubber yoga mats and any mat listing "natural rubber," "tree rubber," or "latex rubber" as materials.
Safe alternatives include TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) which is synthetic and latex-free, PVC which is synthetic and latex-free, synthetic rubber (SBR) which is latex-free, and cork mats with non-rubber backing (verify backing material).
Verifying Latex Content
When a mat claims to be "latex-free," verify that both the surface and backing materials are synthetic. Some mats use natural rubber backing with a synthetic surface — the backing contact with skin may still cause reactions.
When in doubt, contact the manufacturer directly before purchasing if you have latex allergies.
