Reversible Mat
featureYoga mat designed to be used on either side, offering two different surface textures or colors
A reversible yoga mat has two usable practice surfaces — the mat can be flipped and used on either side. This design typically offers two distinct surface textures, sometimes also two colors, giving practitioners options depending on the type of practice.
Why Two Sides?
Different grip characteristics: One side may have a smooth, tacky surface better for dry practices; the other a textured surface that performs better when sweaty. Practitioners choose which side based on the class they're attending.
Different yoga styles: Some reversible mats pair a grippy rubber side for dynamic vinyasa with a softer, cushioned side for restorative or Yin yoga.
Extended use life: When one side shows wear, practitioners can switch to the other side, effectively doubling the mat's functional lifespan.
Aesthetic variety: Two colors or patterns offer visual variety — use one side for the gym and the other for home practice.
Construction Considerations
True reversible mats must have:
- Functional practice surfaces on both sides (not just decorative bottom)
- Sufficient thickness that both surfaces retain adequate cushioning
- A backing material that doesn't slide on the floor regardless of which side faces down
Most reversible mats are made from TPE or natural rubber, which can be manufactured with different textures on each side without an additional adhesive layer.
Popular Examples
Many TPE mats are inherently reversible due to the material's consistent grip on both sides. Some brands specifically market reversible designs with deliberately contrasting surfaces for hot vs. standard yoga.
