Carrying Strap
featureStrap or sling used to carry a rolled yoga mat comfortably over the shoulder or by hand
A carrying strap is an accessory used to transport a rolled yoga mat, typically worn over the shoulder or across the body. While seemingly minor, a good carrying strap transforms the experience of commuting to a yoga studio with a heavy mat.
Types of Carrying Straps
Simple loop strap: A single loop of webbing or fabric that wraps around the mat and provides a shoulder carry handle. Minimal, lightweight, inexpensive.
Adjustable shoulder strap: A longer strap with adjustable length that allows the mat to be carried messenger-bag style across the body, distributing weight more evenly than a shoulder loop.
Backpack straps: Dual straps that allow the mat to be carried on the back like a backpack. The most ergonomic option for heavy mats or long distances.
Integrated strap: Some mats come with a strap built into the design — end loops, embedded carry handles, or a storage sleeve with straps.
Yoga Mat Bags
An alternative to straps, yoga mat bags fully enclose the mat and often include:
- A zippered main compartment for the mat
- Pockets for keys, phone, and small accessories
- Shoulder strap or backpack straps
- Breathable mesh panels to allow the mat to air out
Bags add some bulk but offer better protection for premium mats and weather resistance.
Who Needs a Good Carry System
Anyone who commutes to class benefits from a strap, but it becomes essential for:
- Heavy natural rubber or cork mats (2-3kg)
- Long distances on foot or by transit
- Practitioners carrying additional gear (clothes, water, props)
