Jivamukti Yoga
yoga-styleNew York-born yoga style weaving physical practice with philosophy, music, scripture, and social activism
Jivamukti Yoga was founded in 1984 in New York City by Sharon Gannon and David Life. The method integrates vigorous vinyasa-based physical practice with deep philosophical and ethical teachings, creating a distinctive style that treats yoga as a complete spiritual path rather than purely a physical practice.
Five Tenets
Jivamukti Yoga is built on five tenets:
- Shastra (Scripture): Study of yogic scripture
- Bhakti (Devotion): Acknowledgment of God/the Divine
- Ahimsa (Non-harming): Animal rights and veganism as yogic ethics
- Nada (Music): Use of music as a yoga practice tool
- Dhyana (Meditation): Meditation as essential to practice
The Monthly Focus
Unlike many yoga systems, Jivamukti designates a monthly philosophical theme that certified teachers worldwide incorporate into their classes. This creates a global community of practitioners exploring the same teachings simultaneously.
Physical Practice
Jivamukti physical practice is typically vigorous vinyasa-based, often practiced to music ranging from kirtan to electronic music. Classes are intellectually and spiritually rich while being physically demanding.
Social Ethics
Jivamukti integrates social activism — particularly animal rights and environmental issues — as core yogic practice, making it distinct among major yoga systems.
Standard yoga mats work well for Jivamukti's vinyasa-based format, with grip quality being the primary performance consideration.
