Anusara Yoga
yoga-styleHeart-oriented yoga system emphasizing intrinsic goodness, precise alignment principles, and philosophical depth
Anusara Yoga was founded in 1997 by John Friend as a heart-centered yoga system combining precise alignment principles (Universal Principles of Alignment) with philosophical teachings rooted in Tantric philosophy. The name means "flowing with grace" or "following the heart" in Sanskrit.
Universal Principles of Alignment
Anusara's alignment system consists of five principles applied to every pose:
- Opening to Grace: Setting intention and aligning with highest purpose
- Muscular Energy: Drawing energy toward the midline to create stability
- Inner Spiral/Outer Spiral: Rotational forces that create space and stability in the hips and shoulders
- Expanding Spiral: Lengthening and expanding through the limbs and spine
- Organic Energy: Extending energy out from the core
These principles apply universally across different pose categories, giving practitioners a systematic framework for refinement.
The Anusara Community
Anusara grew into one of the largest yoga systems in the world before John Friend's misconduct in 2012 led to its near-collapse. The practice has since reorganized, with many former teachers continuing to teach Anusara methodology independently.
Practice Characteristics
Anusara classes typically feature:
- Detailed alignment instruction drawing from the Universal Principles
- Philosophical themes woven into physical practice
- Community emphasis and celebration of each student's expression
- Challenging but modification-rich sequences
A standard mat with good grip and moderate cushioning works well for Anusara's alignment-focused style.
